Where it all started . . .
OVER 30 YEARS IN SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS . . .
As Wilsons celebrates 30 years in business, our journey reflects growth, resilience, and strong family values. It all began in 1992 when Richard Hopkins purchased the company, operating from a garage in North London with a modest turnover of £30,000. By 1994, his son Ivan joined, selling products from a suitcase to DIY and Hardware stores, while mum handled customer calls and sister Abi managed the accounts.
In 2000, Wilsons printed its first colour catalogue, and as space became an issue, the business rented two lock-up garages to store stock. By 2001, the product range doubled, and the acquisition of a local doormat importer led to the birth of the Sentry brand. A move to larger premises in Finchley followed, providing much-needed space for the growing business.
In 2003, Wilsons relocated to Colchester, expanding to a 5,000 sq. ft. unit, and by 2005, another move to a 10,000 sq. ft. unit was necessary, and more warehouse staff were hired to meet rising demand.
Growth continued through key acquisitions, including CJ Jenkins and Wm Granger in 2011, followed by Moray Firth Distributors in 2015. Trade shows became an important platform, with Wilsons debuting at Ricoh, Glee, and Spring Fair. In 2017, the company moved to its current location at Emerald House, a 20,000 sq. ft. facility, and further expanded by acquiring Westbrook & Thompson in 2018, adding 1,000 new lines.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Wilsons saw increased demand for essential products, maintaining daily communication with customers. In 2021, a business review led to restructuring, with the directors taking on new roles to navigate supply chain challenges and continued growth.
In 2024, Wilsons acquired the Dethlac brand, with new products set to launch in 2025. A key focus for the business moving forward is to continue expanding and developing its own brands.
